🔒 How We Protect Your Financial Data
WhereMoneyWent is designed with one strict rule:
your bank data must stay on your device.
We never upload your CSV files to a server, never process them in the cloud, and never share them with third parties.
All analysis happens locally in your browser, and the data is stored only in your browser’s local storage.
🛡️ 1. Your CSV Never Leaves Your Device
When you upload a bank statement (CSV):
- The file is read using the browser’s File API
- It is processed directly in your browser’s memory
- No API calls are made that send your transactions anywhere
- After the app loads, there are no network requests containing your financial data
You can verify this yourself via:
Developer Tools → Network.
⚙️ 2. All Processing Happens Locally
Everything happens on your device:
- Reading and parsing your CSV
- Categorizing transactions
- Calculating totals and insights
- Rendering charts and summaries
This logic runs entirely as JavaScript inside your browser.
We never see your data, and it is never uploaded to any backend.
🗂 3. How Local Storage Works
WhereMoneyWent stores your financial data in your browser’s localStorage so you can return to the dashboard later.
Key facts:
- Data is stored only in the browser you used
- Data does not sync across devices
- There is no server database holding your information
Can other websites read my data?
No.
LocalStorage is protected by the browser’s same-origin policy.
Only pages served from: https://app.wheremoneywent.com
can access the stored data.
Other sites, domains, and services cannot read it.
🧼 4. Clear All Data at Any Time
Inside the app, you will find a Storage Inspector page where you can:
- View all data stored in localStorage
- Press Clear localStorage in button of page to wipe everything instantly
After deletion:
- All stored data is removed
- The app resets to a clean state
- You can upload a new CSV whenever you want
You can also clear the data manually through your browser settings.
👀 5. Full Transparency and Verifiability
We intentionally designed the app so you can verify everything we claim.
You can:
- Inspect the stored data via the Local Data page
- Open DevTools → Application → Local Storage to see entries directly
- Open DevTools → Network to confirm that no transaction data is sent out
No hidden requests. No backend involved.
📊 6. What We Don’t Do
To avoid any doubt:
- ❌ We do not upload your CSV to our servers / cloud / any other service
- ❌ We do not send transaction data to analytics
- ❌ We do not store your financial information on our servers
- ❌ We do not share or sell your data
Your bank information stays on your device, and only you control it.
